Rural area in northern Tunisia

For three years, the families of Laafareg (El Fareg), a rural area in the governorate of Béja, lived without running water. Residents filmed by Tunisian television were drawing water from a muddy stream with buckets. “We couldn’t find water,” one man said. “It’s been a month and I haven’t been able to wash.”

A well and a water point

Karim Gharbi funded a well and a water point for the area. The concrete plaque on the new fountain reads a verse from the Quran, “And We made from water every living thing”, followed by “a doer of good”, the date 19.8.2020 and the letters K2.

“If it weren’t for this good man who did this project for us, what would we do?” a resident said. The people of Laafareg decided to name the well after him.

Part of a wider effort

Drinking water is one of the actions Karim lists alongside equipping hospitals, restoring schools and supporting small projects for young people.
